For the first time in 15 years, I walked into a yoga studio. A bit apprehensive, I wondered if I would I remember all those poses. Will I have any balance? Will I look dumb? Will the teacher be annoyed if I can’t keep up? These questions nagged at the back of my consciousness. The grown-up in me said, “Who cares what they think?” But yet those thoughts were STILL there.
“Leave your egos at the door people,” was the first thing the teacher said. “It doesn’t matter if you fall, or need to take a break, or sound funny breathing.” Instantly, I felt better. Why? Because she gave us PERMISSION to be NOT perfect, permission to be human.
If you fall, you get back up – you try again. Lean IN to the difficulty – don’t shy away from it. Yes, your body is shaking, and yes, it feels uncomfortable. Embrace it and lean into it. Then, it’s power is diminished – and YOU have the power.
Scale this up to our daily lives. If we fall at work, or in a meeting, or at home – we get back up and try again. Because without reaching for that elusive goal just outside our comfort zone, we will NOT get there. Get back up – try again. That is the only way we will get there – by failing and trying again. Success doesn’t come easy – if it did, it wouldn’t feel so great when it actually does.
