People who know me, know that I love football, especially the Superbowl. It’s a slice of Americana and gives us a snapshot of the times – everything from food and music to hot products and technology trends – all within the backdrop of the biggest American sport, on the biggest stage with 100 million viewers. Families and friends gather around the TV – it’s one of the few times the Gen Y and Millenials will hang with us old Gen Xers (probably for the food).
As an MSU advertising alum, I love the ads! I’ve taken a look at some of the trends for this year’s big game.
- Mobile continues to dominate financial services with ads featuring applications on the go. See the TurboTax and Intuit Quickbooks ads. Consumers continue to demand mobility.
- Of course a number of big name celebs will appear in ads, but you’ll see many younger, not so famous actors in the brands’ attempt to expand their markets.
- Healthier eating is a trend with ads from Dannon Yogurt, Chobani Yogurt, and Wonderful Pistachios. Are we becoming more healthy as a nation?
- Interactive Social Media continues to grow. The tweet heard around the world last year by Oreo – “You can still dunk in the dark. Power out? No problem.” According to CNBC, it was retweeted 10,000 times in the first hour. Advertisers like Jaguar, Doritos and Pepsi will be live tweeting and watching your tweets, hoping to engage with you one on one.
In the dead of winter, the Superbowl is a welcome break in the Groundhog Day-like monotony, so take a dish to pass and enjoy the game!
