I’m usually the type who likes to ‘just get where I’m going’. I would rather fly to my destinations than stop and smell the roses, but in the case of the recent Pymnts.com Innovation Project 2013 conference, the REWARD was not in the AWARD (which we did not win) but in the journey of TRYING to win.
Pymnts.com bestows innovator awards to payments companies who the industry has voted as the most innovative. VerifyValid was actually chosen as a finalist and for weeks, everyone in the company reached out to their contacts, shouted from atop blogging platforms, facebooked, tweeted and cajoled for votes. As a small start-up, we knew it was going to be a long shot. With a small number of employees, how could we compete with large corps like ING (winner)? But we knew we had to try.
The reaching out, it turns out, resulted in getting the attention of numerous payments industry news sources and more importantly, created a groundswell of support among financial institution associations, tech associations and the local Michigan government, which would love to see a Michigan tech company succeed. Not to mention the incredible social outreach cast by Profitecture – you guys are amazing! During the conference itself, connections were formed to move us further down the road.
So the journey, not the destination was where the true value was realized, and the best part is, it’s not over.
