Last week I wrote about the challenges of networking in a room full of strangers. This topic really resonated with a lot of people! It seems I am not the only person to face a room full of total strangers with a bit of apprehension. Although it may seem difficult, you CAN shift from avoiding to embracing this scenario by developing strategies to make it easier, and also by changing your thinking. Some readers chimed in with their own personal strategies and they were so great, I’m passing them along!
- My personal favorite: One reader referenced the Brady Bunch episode where Mike tells Jan to “picture them in their underwear!” Classic! This reminds us that people are only human and that we all put our pants on one leg at a time, the same as everyone else.
- A friend and fellow blogger wrote, “I find a woman with a great piece of jewelry and start from there. I like to surround myself with sparkly people!” This is great too – finding a common ground to spark a conversation (no pun intended). See her blog here — Kim’s Crazy life.
- Another reader likes to ask people about their favorite foods – this is genius because everyone loves to eat. You can’t go wrong with this one, especially if you are in the buffet line!
One thing I’ve learned in life is that if I am thinking or feeling a certain way, chances are others are too. You are not alone. Thank you to all who shared their strategies – feel free to keep adding more great ideas.
